All the world’s a stage …

Shakespearean scholars are very fond of debating his many works.

One chap I once knew would spout endless lines of King Lear at the slightest hint of an audience which was when I’d usually head for the hills.

But whilst we know a great deal about the great bard’s work, surprisingly little is known about the man himself …

We think he was born on St George’s Day (possibly) and that he left his second-best bed to his wife who survived him.

And we know even less about the Globe Theatre where many of his works were first performed.

Only one drawing of the original theatre survives.

You see, a small cannon was fired during one performance and quite unbelievably, they packed it with lots of real gunpowder which resulted in a very real bang.

It seems painfully obvious to all except those involved that firing a cannon packed with gunpowder inside a building with a thatched roof perhaps wasn’t the smartest of ideas.

And that was the end of the original Globe Theatre!

With little other than exploding props, wayward gunfire and a great deal of imagination the Lord Chamberlain’s men certainly knew how to set the scene.

Luckily, we don’t have to resort to such dangerous theatrics these days, and the risk of burning the house down is greatly reduced.

As Shakespeare famously said, “all the world’s a stage” so let’s deck it out just like he would have done if he’d had the tools we have at our disposal today.
