Bread Wars: France vs. Italy – Who Takes the Crust?

There’s no doubt that the French make wonderful bread.

But in Italy, breadmaking is elevated to an art form and never fails to delight any hungry gastronaut.

The amazing thing is that bakers the world over use the same four basic ingredients: flour, water, salt and yeast.

Yet they turn out wonderful loaves that look and taste quite different.

And with nothing more than lashings of farm-churned salted butter you have the finest of feasts.

If said butter is made with a buttermilk culture, then you’re already halfway to heaven.

The key to success is keeping it simple. Too much meddling doesn’t give you better results.

I have friends who are bread-making fanatics who even go as far as milling their own grain. And then quietly let on that their loaves never quite work out the way they hoped.

It’s nuts. That’s why I buy my flour from specialist millers.

They have the knowledge and equipment to prepare the finest of flours for every type of bread imaginable.

It’s what they do.

Wherever there’s a skills gap and people try and improvise, there’s usually trouble ahead.

Something we see frequently with graphic design.

If you’re struggling and finding yourself reinventing the wheel then we have superb graphic designers on hand to help you every step of the way.

It’s what we do.

Until next time.
