Breath-taking aerobatics …
Now that the clocks have changed many of us have to make our way home in winter’s inky blackness.
But before they wound their way back, there was just enough light for me to walk home across the fields and marvel at watching nature bedding down for winter.
One of my very last cross-country walks home was no exception as I was treated to one of nature’s truly magical displays.
A cacophonous wall of sound overhead alerted me to a Clattering of Jackdaws preparing for bed.
Their noisy chattering was unmistakable as maybe a thousand or more neared their favourite roost in the big wood across the river.
High overhead, they wheeled and banked in a spectacular murmuration.
They soared and fell and climbed again in a mesmerizing and beautifully choreographed dance of fun and joy …
… changing direction with dizzying speed and gravity-defying balletic poetry.
The soundtrack to these breathtaking aerobatics was their cheerful ‘tchack’, ‘tchack’ as they noisily discussed the evening’s arrangements.
One of the smaller members of the corvid family, Jackdaws are extremely intelligent creatures, and they know that safety lies in numbers.
Highly gregarious, they know that life on their own would be miserable and short but as part of a group, they are a force of nature.
Something we could all take note of as we grapple with life’s endless challenges.
A good support network of trusted suppliers to fill the gaps will allow us to achieve far more than we could ever do on our own.
Food for thought as our plans for 2023 takes shape.
