High up in the French Pyrenees sit Le Cirque de Gavarnie.
One of nature’s most breathtaking creations.
A 5,000 feet high wall of rock reaches the sky to form the most spectacular natural amphitheatre.
It is a beguiling but treacherous landscape and a natural wonder of the world which has inspired many writers, including Victor Hugo – he of Les Misérables fame.
It is a wall AND a mountain.
The edifice of a mysterious and celestial architect.
It is the colosseum of nature, he wrote in his epic poem that could only be called God.
Its lower reaches form part of a popular hiking route but standing at its base it would appear impossible to traverse its upper stretches …
But with a guide even those are passable.

All are questions that spring to people’s lips as they hesitate to make the first steps, and understandably so.
