The conker shoot-out of the century …
If the BBC has a conker expert on speed dial, I’m sure they would be heard on the airwaves declaring a vintage year.
In the same way as the head winemaker of one of our ancient port houses might be found wreathed in the smoke from a fine Havana whilst celebrating a momentous grape harvest on the banks of the Douro.
This was confirmed when the present Mrs S. handed me a conker shell found in the garden which was only slightly smaller than a tennis ball.
And what a monster it was – certainly one to nurture for the conker shoot out of the century.
Slightly less impressive in stature but as hard as Tyson Fury is the seven-year-old musket ball of a conker I have on my desk which was probably gathered on some whimsical autumnal walk and kept for I don’t know what.
Perhaps it was the small boy in me that hankers after the annual autumnal thrill of conker shoot-outs in the playground – something still enjoyed by today’s generation.
And long may it continue.
As the pace of life increases frighteningly fast the old ways still endure.
Just as the digital revolution continues apace it is reassuring to know that pound-for-pound a leaflet drop is still the most cost-effective method of reaching a local audience.
Food for thought as you plan your Autumn promotions and are exploring ways to reach your target audience as cost-effectively as possible.

Stay safe.
